Summer Youth Rowing 2003
The Lake Merritt Rowing Club established its Summer Youth Rowing program in 1980. The program is designed to introduce the sport of rowing to the youth of Oakland and the greater East Bay. Summer Youth Rowing is held at The Old Boathouse, 1520 Lakeside Drive in Oakland. There are six, 2-week sessions, 4 in the morning between 9 am and Noon, and 2 in the afternoon between 1 pm and 4. The program is Open to 16 Boys and Girls, Ages 13-17. Swim tests are given on the first day, and non-swimmers are fitted with life jackets. The rest of the session is spent on Lake Merritt, learning to row in 8-oared crew shells. There is a picnic held at the end of each session for participants and their families. The fee for the program is $90 per session, but fee waivers are available on request.
The Program Sponsors The Lake Merritt Rowing Club provides facilities, equipment, funding and overall organization for Summer Youth Rowing. The Oakland Office of Parks and Recreation provides the venue and administrative support. Community groups like the East Oakland Youth Development Center and La Clinica de la Raza have formed partnerships with the Lake Merritt Rowing Club to introduce the program to kids in East Oakland. Numerous individuals contributing through the Friends of Summer Youth Rowing provide about half of SYR’s $10,000 budget.
